3-1-1 Guidelines for Carry-on Luggage:
One bag limit per traveler limits the total amount each traveler can bring. Consolidating the bottles into one bag and X-raying them separately from the carry-on bag enables security officers to quickly clear the items and gets us through quicker. YOU are allowed ONE CARRY-ON BAG WHICH CANNOT WEIGH MORE THAN 40 pounds and cannot be larger than 45 inches (14 x 9 x 22 inches). Please consider that you might be bringing souvenirs home that will add to the weight of what you started out with. You can also bring a personal item onboard (i.e. purse or backpack). If your carry-on luggage weighs more than this, you could be charged over $100.
3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. This includes gels and all liquids. If in doubt, put your liquids in your checked luggage.
Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster checkpoint experience.

Things to Pack in Your Overnight Bag/ Purse/ Backpack:
An extra set of clothes in case your luggage doesn't find you for a couple of days. It happens!
Camera, extra batteries or adapter to charge batteries (batteries are much more expensive in Europe.)
Medications (i.e. decongestant, Z-pack, Cipro, Alleve, Benedryl, ex-Lax.....whatever you think you might need)
Credit card and/or debit card. Call your bank or credit card company and tell them you will be using these in Europe; if you don't, they might freeze your account. It's happened a few times on past trips. And don't bring Traveler's Cheques! Most places do not accept them.
Student I.D. This might get you discounts in some places.
Travel pouch to store money and passport under clothing to avoid being pickpocketed
Whatever you might want on the plane: novel, crossword puzzles, iPod, snacks, etc. Ear plugs (called “EarPlanes”) or gum for plane for air pressure, especially if you have sinus problems, and maybe even regular earplugs for noise since we might be staying in hotels in cities where there might be noise on the streets at night.
Toiletries (some make-up, toothpaste/brush); if you wear glasses or contacts, extra pair in case one is lost.
Antibacterial moist wipes - pretty cheap for the Walgreen's or Wal-Mart brand. You’ll appreciate having these after a full day of travel or pacing city streets.
Suggested List of Clothing to Pack in Check-On Luggage:
YOUR CHECK-ON SUITCASE MUST NOT WEIGH OVER 50 POUNDS -- That means on the way to Europe and the way back. Again, consider souvenirs or items you may buy for yourself. If even a pound more than 50, it will cost $150.00
Very comfortable loose-fitting clothes for the flight there and back
6-7 pairs of pants/jeans/capris/skirts
NO SHORTS OR TANK TOPS (NOTE: To enter cathedrals, your knees & shoulders must be covered.)
1 dress pants or dress
8-9 tops (shirts, blouses, tee shirts) to mix and match with pants or skirt
Pajamas and slippers or flip flops (Flip flops work well as shower shoes and as slippers, not great pounding the pavement.)
Light sweater for the plane or travel coach
13 pairs of underwear (Easier than washing clothes on the trip)
2 pairs of shoes: one for comfort, one a little dressier. For comfort’s sake, break in your shoes well in advance.
Bathing suit - possibly at night at the hotel, you'll get chance to swim
Things to Pack in your Check-On Luggage:

Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc. You need an adaptor for Italy!

Addresses for postcards you might want to send

Kitchen-size garbage bag to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones
