Places & Experiences that Have Become Part of Us
For the past 14 years, we have visited many European countries including England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Greece, and Spain. Over 45 students and 30 adults have joined Bonnabel's EF tours since 2000. We have gone swimming in ice-cold glacial lakes in Switzerland and sunbathed on the warm beaches of Rhodes and Biarritz; had front-row "seats" for the Queen of England's birthday parade where we saw the royal family live and up close; seen and heard Pope Benedict speak from his Vatican balcony; picnicked under the Eiffel Tower and in the gardens of the Pitti Palace; toured Edinburgh's underground while hearing how ghosts still roam there; sailed down the Thames River before stopping for a meal of fish and chips; climbed the still-seething volcano in Santorini; walked the streets of ancient Ephesus and Pompeii; thrown coins in the Trevi Fountain; kissed the Blarney Stone; posed next to the windmills of Mykonos; cruised the canals of Venice in gondolas; sang at the Hofbrau house in Munich while the World Cup was going on there; stood in the Greek god Apollo's temple in Delphi; walked the route of the bulls in Pamplona; gazed upon the ruins of Stonehenge; danced on Henry VIII's grave; walked solemnly through Nazi concentration camps; eaten gelato as we wandered the streets of Rome; enjoyed the musical "Wicked" in London's West End district; rode the high-speed Eurostar through the Chunnel; visited the tombs of Queen Elizabeth I, her sister Bloody Mary, Darwin, Chaucer, Michelangelo, Galileo, and Pope John Paul; taken a jaunty horse and carriage ride through Killarney National Park in Ireland; toured medieval castles and cathedrals; strolled Las Ramblas and eaten tapas in Barcelona and pinxtos in San Sebastian; drank a glass of champagne with lunch in the artist district of Montmartre in Paris; stayed in apartments of the communist media in Budapest; stood in awe in front of Michelangelo's David and da Vinci's Mona Lisa; laughed hysterically on the night trains; visited the homes of McCartney and Lennon in Liverpool after our drive down Penny Lane; climbed the Dune de Plat in Southern France; closed our eyes and just listened to the bustling pedestrians talking in their unique tongues and knowing we were elsewhere; and have created so many incredible memories and have made many lifelong friendships! Many people -- young and old -- have joined us for encore trips. Enjoy the photos and the smiling faces! No doubt, the trips offer a life-altering experience!

Testimonials from Those Who Have Traveled with the Bonnabel EF Group:
"We have two sons who participated in EF tours sponsored and organized by Gwen Leonhard. They were trips of a lifetime for Chris and Nicholas. The trips were well planned, and as parents, we knew that Ms. Leonhard would see that they were safe. The boys learned so much about traveling and the various cities and countries they visited. They enjoyed all of the activities and sites they toured. These trips helped the boys grow up and learn to handle traveling experiences. Traveling abroad helped to give them a bigger picture of their world and instilled in them a strong desire to travel. They still talk about their experiences years after their trips." ~~ Mr. & Mrs. Fenner, Sons Traveled in 2004 and 2006 and their Daughter Traveled in 2012
"I have traveled throughout the U.S., South Pacific, and Europe on my own. In 2005, I joined Gwen for my first EF tour. The EF experience was terrific! The tour price includes everything except lunch and souvenirs - REALLY. Everything is planned for you. Just sit back and enjoy the adventure by train, ferry, and motor coach. The EF tour leaders are professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The number of sights and attractions included in the price is mind-boggling! We don’t miss much in any destination city. Gwen has traveled extensively in Europe with EF and knows all the tricks of the trade to ensure her group gets everything promised plus a little lagniappe. I had such a good time in 2005, I went again for 4 consecutive years! Can’t wait to join Gwen and her traveling Bruins for my next EF adventure!" ~~ Mary Ehret, N.O. Lawyer, Traveled in '05, '06, '07, '08, and 2012
"It's difficult to remember exactly whose idea it was to plan a trip to Europe. I think it began junior year, 1999, while planning for our senior-year "Independent Studies" class with Gwen Leonhard. Scott D'Aunoy, Christopher Calvin, and I decided to study several aspects of Greece and Italy, then teach each other what we'd learned through presentations. The crowning achievement of the class was that Gwen (I say this respectfully after moving from teacher-student to life-long friends) agreed to take us to these places that we'd prepared all school year to see. We raised funds, invited classmates and family, decided that EF Tours was the touring company for us, and packed our bags in the summer of 2000! It was the ultimate "Senior Trip" and nothing could have prepared us for what we experienced. That single trip took us to the grandeur of the Vatican in Rome, the foot of Michelangelo's David in Florence, the ancient brothels (Note from Ms. Leonhard: brothels no longer in business) of Pompeii, the Mediterranean, the pebble beaches of Rhodes, the Blue Grotto in Capri, nighttime shopping in Athens' Plaka, a disco in Delphi, and the steps of the Acropolis where we watch Santa Gwenita slip down the slipping stones!!! I have countless, priceless memories that I still reference ten years after the fact. I'm eternally grateful to Gwen for supporting and encouraging us to take a truly life-changing trip!!!" ~~ Jose Gutierrez, Bonnabel Student, Traveled in 2000
"It was incredible seeing and learning about so many fascinating historic places from the ruins of ancient Greece to the still-thriving Vatican City, meeting new friends (some who couldn't even speak English!), sampling the local cuisine. The most intriguing part of the experience was seeing how other people live across the ocean and realizing that while America is great, it is not the center of the universe! My favorite memory was sitting on the Spanish Steps in Rome while eating a gelato. I remember looking out into the streets and being amazed at how history and modernity blended together with rows and rows of designer stores -- like Valentino and Prada -- sitting side-by-side among centuries-old buildings. It was so cool!" ~~ Shree Patel, Bonnabel Student, Traveled in '05
"I was on my aunt's (Ms. Leonhard) first EF trip in 2000 when we went to Italy and Greece. What an incredible experience! Seeing the Parthenon looming above the Acropolis! Sailing up to Mykonos! Having a slice of pizza in the piazza in front of the Pantheon! I could go on forever. I was the only student not from Bonnabel, but everybody made me feel like they'd known me forever. We had a blast! In 2002, I went with the group to London & Paris; and, in 2008, I went with them to Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. I would never have seen all of the sites throughout Europe if it hadn't been for the opportunity offered by EF. Prices and payment plans are very reasonable! Tours are so informative! I'm hoping to go with EF again in 2012! Fo Sure!" ~~ Brittany Baker, Chapelle High School Student, Traveled in 2000, '02, and '08
"I was in my second year of college when I joined Ms. Leonhard's Italy & Greece trip. I'll never forget our first night after just having arrived in Rome. We decided to take a short walk around. Thinking a small walking tour would be a good start, it turned out to be an amazing experience. We turn one corner, and there's the Pantheon. Turn another corner, and there's the Trevi Fountain. Turn another corner, and we're standing in Piazza Navona. The amazing part was seeing all of these places for the first time at night all lit up, which was absolutely beautiful and easily made me realize this was a truly special place. I really like the services EF provided. The package conveniently includes all modes of transportation, and I liked how we were also provided group tickets to some of the sights, so we didn't have to wait in line or look for a good deal. They have a good balance between giving a detailed itinerary of things to do as well as allowing enough free time in the schedule to do your own activity. Some of our best times were when we just wandered the streets of cities I had only dreamt about.....Athens, Rome, Florence. The schedule is packed with either sightseeing or traveling, morning to night, which was important to me since I preferred to enjoy every moment there and wait to sleep when I got back home." ~~ Arshish Tarapore, Bonnabel Student, Traveled in '05
"London was the bomb diggity!" Quote me on that! :) Being in London, Paris, and Rome was so much fun! The best part is when you're just walking with your friends and exploring the city and taking in the culture. I had the most fun walking in Florence to the pretty gardens and chillin' on Dante's doorstep. That's pretty exhilarating. instead of trying to take pictures of every single thing you see, just chill out and soak in what you are seeing in the moment. That's a mistake I made. I took way too many pictures and when I got them developed, I almost couldn't recognize half the pictures. So just soak it in because you'll never know when you'll be able to go again!” ~~ Kaushiki Chowdhury, Bonnabel Student, Traveled in 2004
"Recalling the three trips in which I've participated, I remember those moments of pure awe that I've experienced: standing inside the Colosseum in Rome, looking up at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, walking the streets of Pompeii in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius, riding a boat into the harbor surrounding Santorini in Greece, and climbing to the top of one of the lookout towers at Conwy Castle in Wales (just to name a few). Europe has such an old and rich history that it is hard not to be taken aback. Then, there are the smaller moments like drinking Guinness, well, everywhere in the UK or watching the shepherd demonstration along the Ring of Kerry in Ireland or getting directions through pointing and gestures from a nice gentleman in Budapest or eating melon gelato by the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Rome. More than anything, these trips have shown me that despite our differences in language, currency, religion, etc., people around the world are more alike than different. I look forward to my next trip with Gwen and EF tours in 2011!" ~~ Jared Boscareno, West Jefferson High Teacher, Traveled in '08, '09, '10, and 2012.
"We see these beautiful, foreign cities in movies on the big screen, but it's nothing like seeing it with your own eyes. There is so much more in the world outside of the U.S. that should be seen, and EF Tours makes sure you do! They provide you with a plan for every day, including free time for shopping, and tour guides that really know their stuff! I really enjoyed that our tour guide, Reuben, not only shared the history of the countries, but told us how the natives live and helped us learn some of the languages. While many of my friends have seen shows on Broadway, I can say that I saw "Wicked" in London! I also went to the top of the Eiffel tower, visited the tombs of a number of historical figures, went to the Louvre Museum, and so much more- all in one trip. Thanks to Ms. Leonhard and EF tours, I had an experience that I'll never forget and I can't wait to go again! ~~ Victoria Lafitte, Bonnabel Student, Traveled in '08
"My favorite memory about my trip to Europe was in Florence, Italy. I trekked across town to visit the Duomo, the 4th largest cathedral in the world, known for its magnificent dome. Climbing through the double dome of the Duomo on an old, worn stone staircases was exciting enough; but once I emerged out onto the cupola atop the dome, the view was breathtaking! All around me were the terracotta rooftops of Florence. I could see the Palazzo Pitti where the famous Medici family lived, the Ponte Vecchio bridge lined with silversmith shops crossing the Arno, the Piazza della Signoria where the David statue stood, and the Santa Croce Church where Michelangelo and Galileo are buried. It will forever be the moment that defines the best trip of my life." ~~ Christopher Fenner, Bonnabel Student, Traveled in 2004
"As a present to my daughter who was graduating from Bonnabel in 2004, I decided that it would be fun for both of us to take Ms. Leonhard's Europe trip. Neither my daughter nor I knew any other participants or even Ms. Leonhard very well. It didn't matter! Everyone was so nice and fun. We had a wonderful time! In fact I had so much fun and learned so much from this adventure that I treated myself to two more trips with Ms. Leonhard's group and am looking into traveling with them again soon. Money well spent!" ~~ Deanna Mouret, Bonnabel Student Parent, Traveled in '04, '05, '08 and 2014.

"I brought my son who attends Jesuit High School. It was a delightful trip that opened up our eyes to cultural differences and new experiences. Truly educational! The meals were delicious and the hotels were great. No complaints. Great bonding experience with my son. I am definitely thinking of joining Gwen's group again in the near future. Our trip to Italy and Greece was phenomenal and well worth the price of the trip." ~~ Kim Brandt, Traveled in '13 and '14.
